Saraswati Temple in Saraswatikhel, Bhaktapur is one of the oldest and most revered temples dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of knowledge, wisdom, music, arts, and learning. Located in Changunarayan Municipality near Bode, this sacred site attracts students, scholars, and devotees seeking blessings for academic success and intellectual growth.Locally, the temple deity is known as Sasudyo (or Sasumaju) and is often associated with Mahamahim Manjushree, the legendary figure believed to have drained the ancient Kathmandu Valley lake by cutting the Chobar gorge. According to local tradition, devotees massage the goddess’s legs with mustard oil during Basanta Panchami (Saraswati Puja) to relieve the fatigue from her long mythological journey.Historically, the area underwent renaming during the reign of King Mahendra, when education minister Laxmi Prasad Devkota promoted Nepali identity by renaming cultural and religious sites. During this period, Sasuthali became Saraswatikhel, and the local deity Sasudyo came to be identified with Saraswati Mata, aligning the site with the Hindu goddess of education.Today, Saraswatikhel is an important pilgrimage site, especially during Shree Panchami (Saraswati Puja), when thousands of devotees visit the temple. Students offer books, pens, and musical instruments, praying for success in education and lifelong learning. भक्तपुर जिल्लाको चांगुनारायण नगरपालिका अन्तर्गत बोडे नजिक अवस्थित सरस्वतीखेलको सरस्वती मन्दिर काठमाडौँ उपत्यकाका सबैभन्दा पुराना र महत्वपूर्ण सरस्वती मन्दिरमध्ये एक हो। यो मन्दिर ज्ञान, बुद्धि, संगीत, कला र शिक्षा की देवी सरस्वती मातालाई समर्पित छ। विद्यार्थी, शिक्षक तथा साधकहरू यहाँ अध्ययन र सिर्जनात्मक सफलताको कामना गर्दै दर्शन गर्न आउने गर्दछन्।स्थानीय रूपमा यस देवीलाई ससुद्यो (वा ससुमाजु) भनेर चिनिन्छ। लोकविश्वास अनुसार, यो देवीलाई काठमाडौँ उपत्यकाको प्राचीन ताल चोभार काटेर निकास गर्ने मञ्जुश्रीसँग पनि सम्बन्धित मानिन्छ। विशेषगरी बसन्त पञ्चमी (सरस्वती पूजा) का दिन भक्तजनहरूले देवीको लामो यात्राको थकान कम होस् भनेर तोरीको तेलले खुट्टा मालिस गर्ने परम्परा अझै जीवित छ।इतिहासअनुसार, राजा महेन्द्रको शासनकालमा शिक्षा मन्त्री लक्ष्मीप्रसाद देवकोटा को पहलमा नेपाली भाषा र पहिचान प्रवर्द्धन गर्न धेरै स्थानहरूको नाम परिवर्तन गरिएको थियो। सो क्रममा ससुथलीलाई सरस्वतीखेल नामकरण गरियो र ससुद्यो देवीलाई सरस्वती मातासँग पहिचान गरियो। यस्तै, नागदेय नागदेश र बोरदेय बोडे बने जस्तै नाम परिवर्तन भए पनि स्थानीयहरूले परम्परागत नामलाई अझै सम्झिराखेका छन्।आज सरस्वतीखेल विशेषगरी श्री पञ्चमी (सरस्वती पूजा) मा अत्यन्त भीडभाड हुने धार्मिक स्थल हो। यस दिन हजारौँ विद्यार्थीहरूले पुस्तक, कापी, कलम तथा वाद्ययन्त्र चढाई अध्ययनमा सफलता प्राप्त होस् भनी पूजा गर्ने गर्दछन्। हरेक बिहीबार पनि यहाँ पूजा गर्न आउने भक्तजनहरूको उपस्थिति रहने गर्छ।काठमाडौँ उपत्यकाको शैक्षिक र सांस्कृतिक दृष्टिले महत्वपूर्ण मानिने सरस्वतीखेलको सरस्वती मन्दिर आज पनि पुस्तौँदेखि विद्यार्थीहरूको ज्ञानयात्रा आरम्भ गर्ने पवित्र स्थलको रूपमा परिचित छ।
