Nilbarahi Temple is one of the four major Barahi temples in Kathmandu Valley. This temple is amid dense forest on a hillock on the south side of the Manhora river in Bode. The temple has an area of about 400 Ropani and is an important site in terms of nature, religion, culture, and tourism. On Saturday the temple area is filled with pilgrims and picnickers. Every year during Rishi Purnima, there is a tradition of performing a three-day Nilbarahi dance in the name of this deity.
Barahi is one of the eight mother goddesses known as Astamatrika. She is a female consort of lord Bishnu in Barah’s avatar. She is praised for her Tantric powers of ending one’s misery. She is portrayed as a Devi with a dark cloud complexion, riding on a buffalo, with a head resembling to of wild boar. She has four arms holding a skullcap, a snake, Gadha, and another in an Avaya Mudra.
Nilbarahi temple is one of the powerful Ashtamatrika Shaktipeeth. The metal idol of Nilbarahi Devi is brought to the temple only on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 pm. Nilbarahi Temple has a suitable venue for all kinds of religious occasions. Like in the other three Barahi temples, there is no Gajur in this temple too. On the premise of this temple, there are Satal, Pati, Bhajan Mandali, and many other idols of God and Goddesses. To get the blessings of Devi Barahi one must visit the Nilbarahi temple.
नीलबाराही मन्दिर काठमाडौँ उपत्यकाको चार प्रमुख बाराही मन्दिरहरुमा पर्दछ । यो मन्दिर बोडे नजिकै मनहोरा खोलाको दक्षिण तर्फ घना वनको बीचमा एउटा डाडाको थुम्कोमा अवस्थित छ । करिब ४०० रोपनी छेत्रफलमा फैलिएको यो मन्दिर प्राकृतिक, धार्मिक, संस्कृतिक र पर्यटकीय हिसाबले निकै महत्वपुर्ण देखिन्छ । यो मन्दिरमा सनिबरको दिन पुजागर्न तथा वनभोज गर्न आउनेहरुक भिड लग्दछ । प्रत्येक वर्ष ऋषि पुर्णिमाको बेला यहाँ तिन दिनको नीलबाराही नाच गर्ने चलन छ ।
बाराही भनेर बिष्णु भगवानको बराहा अवतरको नारिशक्तिलाई बुझिन्छ। येसैगरि नीलबाराही भनेर निलो रंग को बाराही भन्ने बुझिन्छ। नीलबाराहीको दर्सन गर्नाले तान्त्रिक शक्तिबाट दुख कस्ट बाट मुक्ति मिल्ने विश्वास गरिन्छ । यो मन्दिर अस्ठमात्रिका शक्तिपीठ अन्तर्गत पर्दछ। नीलबाराहीको धातुको मुर्ति दर्सनको लागि सनिबारको दिन मात्र बिहान ८ देखि १२ बजे सम्म मन्दिरमा राखिन्छ। मन्दिर प्रांगणमा सतल, पाटी, भजन मण्डली, र अरु धेरै भगवानका मुर्तिहरु रहेको छन। नीलबाराही मन्दिरमा सबै किसिमको धार्मिक कर्यगर्नको लागि उचित व्यवस्था गरिएको छ। चार बाराही जस्तै यो मन्दिरमा पनि गजुर राखिएको छैन। मन्दिर निकै सुन्दर र कलात्मक ढंग बाट बनाइएको छ । यो मन्दिर पुग्न साथ् जो कोहिले पनि सान्ति र अनानादा को महसुस गर्न सक्दछन । मन्दिरमा वरिपरि को बनमा निकै धेरै संख्या मा बादरहरु पनि देख्न सकिन्छ । बाराहीमाताको शक्ति महसुस गर्न एकपल्ट जानै पर्ने मन्दिर हो नीलबाराही ।
