Gosaikunda lake is found inscribed in the story of “Samundra Manthan” or “Churning of the ocean” in the text of Vishnu Purana, Mahabharat, and Bhagvat Purana. It is believed that during the churning of the ocean performed by Gods and Demons, to get the vine of immortality, various elements came into existence. One of the elements was a deadly poison named “Kalkut Bis”, to protect all, lord Shiva drunk the poison and held it in his throat. Lord Shiva himself could not bear the effect of poison so he flew to the Himalayas of Langtang National Park. Upon reaching there, with his trident or Trishul he bored water from the rocky mountain and drunk it cool his throat. The water eventually made Gosainkunda Lake and the river originated from it was called Trishuli.
