Among the many pilgrimage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, the Charkhandi pilgrimage site is the most pristine. This pilgrimage site is located on the Charkhandi river that flows along the border of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. Due to this river flowing northward this place of pilgrimage has been famous since ancient times. In the Swasthani Brata Katha there is a description of Chatakeshwor Mahadev located here. Observing the Jyotirlinga of Mahadev in its natural form in the middle of the river is a feeling of unimaginable joy. There is a legend about the origin of this shrine that in ancient times, an injured sparrow fell on the bank of this river, then a fur of that sparrow was blown by the wind which fell into the pool in this river. After some time, suddenly the sparrow got healed and flew away. It is believed that the farmers who saw this incident started worshiping the Jyotirlinga here as Chatkeshwor Mahadev from that day.
Temples and idols of gods and goddesses have been constructed in this place since ancient times. Among them, the temples and idols of Shri Ganesha, Bishnu Lakshmi, Radha Krishna, and Hanuman look very ancient.
Proper arrangements have been made for Shraddha and cremation at this shrine. Spread over about 12 Ropanis of land, this pilgrimage site is not crowded, making for a peaceful and serene pilgrimage. चरखंडी तिर्थस्थल
काठमाडौँ उपत्यकामा रहेका धेरै तिर्थस्थल मध्येको अतिनै स्वछ अवस्थामा रहेको तिर्थस्थल हो चरखंडी तिर्थस्थल । यो तिर्थस्थल भक्तपुर र ललितपुर जिल्लाको सिमानाभै बग्ने चरखंडी खोलामा अवस्थित छ । तिर्थस्थलभइ उत्तर बग्ने यो खोलाले गर्दा यो तिर्थस्थल पौराणिक काल देखिनै प्रसिद्ध छ । स्वस्थानी व्रत कथामा यहाँ अवस्थित चटकेश्वोर महादेव को वर्णन गरेको पाइन्छ। खोलाको बिचमा प्राकृतिक स्वरुपमा रहेको महादेव को ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग को दर्शनगर्दा अकल्पनीय आनन्दको अनुभूति हुन्छ । यो तीर्थस्थलको उतपति वारे एस्तो किम्बदन्ती छ कि परापुर्व कालमा एउटा घाइते भंगेरो यस खोलाको किनारमा आइ खस्छ, त्यसपछि त्यो भंगेरोको एउटा प्वुआख हावाले उडाएर यस खोलामा रहेको कुण्डमा झारदिन्छ । केहि समय नवित्दै अकस्मात त्यो भंगेरो ठिक भएर उडेर जान्छ । यो चटक प्रतक्छ्य देख्ने किसानहरुले त्यसदिन देखि यहाँ रहेको ज्योतिर्लिङ्गलाई चटकेश्वोर महादेव को नामले पुज्न थालेका रहेछन।
यस तिर्थस्थलमा प्राचिन कालदेखि विभिन्न समयमा देव देवीको मन्दिर तथा मुर्तिहरुको संरचना गरिदै आएको रहेछ। जसमध्ये श्री गणेश, बिष्णु, लक्ष्मी, राधा, कृष्ण, र हनुमानको मन्दिर तथा मुर्तिहरु निकै प्राचिन देखिन्छन ।
अहले पनि यो तिर्थस्थलमा श्राद्ध तथा दाहसंस्कार गर्नको लागि उचित व्यवस्था गरिएको छ। लगभग १२ रोपनी जग्गा मा फैलिएको यो तिर्थस्थलमा धेरै भिड नहुने भएकाले, शान्त र स्वछ तीर्थयात्र गर्नको लागि निकैनै आनन्द दयाक छ । यदि तपाई काठमाडौँमा बस्दै वा घुम्दै हुनुन्छ र पित्रिपुजको लागि भिडभाड नहुने स्वछ बातावरण को खोजीमा हुनुन्छ भने, चरखंडी तीर्थस्थलमा तपाइको मनोकामना अवस्यनै पुरा हुन्छ ।
