According to the legend, the goddess who appeared in the form of a stone was none other than Parvati, who manifested after being pleased by Lord Buddha’s meditation. Both Buddhist and Hindu traditions worship the goddess here. Devotees from the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts worship bajrayogini as a tantric goddess.Regarding the origin of the bajrayogini statue, as written in religious scriptures, it is said that the Ice Age had just begun on Earth. In the place where the temple is currently located, flames of fire emerged from the cracks of a stone. From these flames, over time, the goddess known as Jwalamukhi was born, and she is the same goddess who became famous as bajrayogini. The bajrayogini temple, built in the pagoda style, is about 500 years old, as mentioned in the inscription of King Pratap Mall’s stone pillar placed in the temple complex. The fire that burned in the temple complex is considered the fire of the Satya Yuga (Golden Age). In the temple area, there are caves from the Stone Age, and one of these caves is known as the “Pap Dharma Cave.” It is believed that the priests of bajrayogini meditate for nine days every 12 years in this cave. It is also said that the marriage of the Tibetan Emperor Shramchan Gambo and Bhrikuti took place at the Sakhu bajrayogini Temple. Around the 7th century, after his marriage to Bhrikuti, Emperor Shramchan Ghambo is believed to have taken Buddhism as a dowry from here, and this tradition continues. Along with that, the Kaligad (a sacred item) was also taken. Wherever the emperor rested on the way, a monastery was built there. The location of Sakhhu has a remarkable connection to the number eight: eight villages, eight roads, eight streams, eight wells, and eight marriages. The eight sisters of Vajrayogini were believed to have placed four offerings, and it is believed that the number eight signifies the divine presence. Before reaching Vajrayogini, there is a place called Bhairab Temple, associated with the myth of Brahma and Vishnu. Both gods claimed to be the greatest, and Brahma, in his pride, tried to prove himself by uttering lies. Seeing this, Lord Shiva punished him for his falsehood and arrogance. Lord Shiva assumed the form of Bhairab, and Bhairab cut off one of Brahma’s heads. Later, Lord Shiva was also cursed for the act of cutting Brahma’s head. The terrifying and fearsome form of Lord Shiva in this act is considered the form of Bhairab. You all should definitely visit the bajrayogini Temple as well.
