Hallucinating mushrooms found in Kathmandu valley

Kathmandu receives monsoon rainfall during June, July and August. During this time a very common type of magic mushrooms known as Liberty Caps are seen growing in animal pastures of the valley. It is said that consuming these mushrooms will give a hallucinogenic effect to ones body. Such effect lasts for few hours but might leave permanent distortion in one’s perception.

Scientist’s found that these type of Psilocybin mushrooms contains Lysergic Acid also commonly known as LSD which is responsible for such hallucinating effect. LSD is a neurotoxin which stretches neural networks of the body and also generates new networks in the brain. Due to this the effect of such neurotoxin is permanent.

The use of magic mushrooms started early in 1960’s after Hoffman accidently discovered LSD while researching a deadly fungal found in Ergot. After since it has been used as prime drug in the Trance Festivals. The early notable appearance of magic mushrooms can be seen in the story of “Alice in Wonderland” and the “Mario” game. Ever since mushroom has been common symbol for Psychedelic festivals.

There are total 182 type of Psilocybin mushrooms discovered to date. Out of them more than 150 are found in Nepal.
